5 Days Cycling Via Kilema Route - What's Included
5 Days Cycling Via Kilema Route - Daily Itinerary
You will be picked up from your hotel at 8:30 a.m.
Today, cycling is the only mode of transportation as we travel through the
semi-tropical foothills of Kilimanjaro to Marangu Gate, where we register and
obtain permits. Next, we drive to Kilema Gate to enter Kilimanjaro National
Park and start the ride up to Horombo Hut. The 19-kilometer cycling ride is covered
by forest and moorland.
After breakfast, you start cycling across the Alpine
desert; in some places, you'll be riding on small stones to get to Mawenzi Hut
and back, then you'll cycle back to Horombo Hut. Today, 90% of the cycling
route is on "Alpine desert vegetation, cycling distance is 10 kilometers.
- Distance Covered: 5.7 miles
- Time to be used: 6 - 7 hours
Make sure you get up early and pack your duffel bags
before leaving. Meet your guide after breakfast, and then we ascend to Kibo Hut
once more. Once more, the first 3 km would involve a lot of pushing and
carrying your bike, whereas the last 7 km to Kibo Hut provide a nice bicycle
track. We'll have lunch and then try to get some rest. You may trek a portion
of the summit path at around 16h00 to be oriented for the summit attempt later
that night, depending on how you feel. The stone-built Kibo cabin, which contains
bunk beds for 60 climbers but no nearby streams with water, is located in the
desolate Alpine desert. Behind the hut are platform restrooms. The summit
(Uhuru Peak) is now a further 1195 meters up, and you will make your final
ascent the same night. Prepare your equipment, thermal clothing, etc. for your
summit bid. This should include the replacement of your headlamp and camera
batteries, and make sure you have a spare set available as well. To prevent
freezing, it will be wise to carry your water in a thermal flask. Go to bed
around 19 h and try to sleep and rest as much as possible until 22 h.
Your guides will wake you up at four in the morning to
begin the zigzag climb up the long screen slope. You should arrive at Hans
Meyer's Cave after about two hours, and the incline becomes steeper from here.
Continue trekking for another three hours or so to Gilman's Point, where you
will pick up your bike from Porters and begin riding to Uhuru Peak. Once there,
you will spend a short time taking pictures and then descend to Stella Point.
After lunch, take a bike down to Horombo. Today, while cycling from Kibo to
Uhuru, 15% to 20% of the vegetation is alpine desert, and from Kibo to Horombo,
100% of the vegetation is alpine desert or icecap.
After breakfast, have one last ride through the alpine
and the rain forest to the Kilema gate. From there, you will be taken to the
Marangu gate for check-out before being taken to your hotel in Moshi.
